Veritas Study: Organizations Worldwide Mistakenly Believe They Are GDPR Compliant
A study from Veritas Technologies, a leader in multi-cloud data management, has found that organizations across the globe mistakenly believe they are in compliance with the upcoming General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
According to findings from The Veritas 2017 GDPR Report, almost one-third (31 percent) of respondents said that their enterprise already conforms to the legislation’s key requirements. However, when those same respondents were asked about specific GDPR provisions, most provided answers that show they are unlikely to be in compliance. In fact, upon closer inspection, only two percent actually appear to be in compliance, revealing a distinct misunderstanding over regulation readiness.
The findings from the report show that almost half (48 percent) of organizations who stated they are compliant do not have full visibility over personal data loss incidents. Moreover, 61 percent of the same group admitted that it is difficult for their organization to identify and report a personal data breach within 72 hours of awareness – a mandatory GDPR requirement where there is a risk to data subjects. Any organization that is unable to report the loss or theft of personal data – such as medical records, email addresses and passwords – to the supervisory body within this timeframe is breaking with this key requirement.
The findings in this report suggest that organizations that think they are already compliant with the GDPR should revisit their compliance strategies. Failure to meet GDPR requirements could attract a fine of up to four percent of global annual turnover or €20 million, whichever is greater.
The former employee threat
Restricting former employee access to corporate data and deleting their systems credentials helps to stem malicious activity and ensure that financial loss and reputational damage are avoided. Yet, a staggering 50 percent of so-called compliant organizations said that former employees are still able to access internal data. These findings highlight that even the most confident organizations struggle to control former employee access and are potentially susceptible to attacks.
Challenges exercising “the right to be forgotten”
Under the GDPR, EU residents will have the right to request the removal of their personal data from an organization’s databases. However, Veritas’ research shows many organizations that stated they already are in compliance will not be able to search, find and erase personal data if the “right to be forgotten” principle is exercised.
Of the organizations that believe they are GDPR-ready, one-fifth (18 percent) admitted that personal data cannot be purged or modified. A further 13 percent conceded that they do not have the capability to search and analyze personal data to uncover explicit and implicit references to an individual. They are also unable to accurately visualize where their data is stored, because their data sources and repositories are not clearly defined.
These shortcomings would render a company non-compliant under the GDPR. Organizations must ensure that personal data is only used for the reasons it was collected and is deleted when it’s no longer needed.
Demystifying GDPR responsibility
Veritas’ research also found that there is a common misunderstanding among organizations regarding the responsibility of data held in cloud environments. Almost half (49 percent) of the companies that believe they comply with the GDPR consider it the sole responsibility of the cloud service provider (CSP) to ensure data compliance in the cloud. In fact, the responsibility lies with the data controller (the organization) to ensure that the data processor (the CSP) provides sufficient GDPR guarantees. This perceived false sense of protection could lead to serious repercussions once the GDPR is enacted.
“The GDPR dictates that multi-national corporations take data management seriously. However, the latest findings show confusion over what’s needed to comply with the regulation’s mandatory provisions. With the implementation date looming ever closer, these misconceptions need to be eradicated fast,” said Mike Palmer, executive vice president and chief product officer, Veritas.
“With regulations like the GDPR you have to understand what data you have in your organization. But you must also know how to take action on it and how to classify it so that policy can be applied accordingly. These are the fundamentals of compliance and the findings today should be used to educate businesses about the mistaken beliefs that could put an organization out of business.”
The GDPR is intended to harmonize data privacy and protection mandates across European Union (EU) member states. It requires organizations to implement the appropriate protection measures and processes to effectively govern personal data. The GDPR will take effect on May 25, 2018 and will apply to any organization – inside or outside the EU – that offers goods or services to EU residents, or monitors their behavior. A total of 900 business decision makers were interviewed in February and March across the US, the UK, France, Germany, Australia, Singapore, Japan and the Republic of Korea. Mobileye Announces Satisfaction of Antitrust Clearance Condition for Tender Offer By Intel
Mobileye N.V. (“Mobileye” or the “Company”), the global leader in Advanced Driver Assistance Systems and autonomous driving technologies, today announced that on July 31, 2017 the Korea Fair Trade Commission approved the previously announced all cash tender offer by Cyclops Holdings, LLC (“Cyclops”), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Intel Corporation (“Intel”), to purchase all of the outstanding ordinary shares of Mobileye pursuant to the Purchase Agreement, dated as of March 12, 2017, by and among Intel, Cyclops and Mobileye (the “Purchase Agreement”).
As a result of the approval of the tender offer from the Korea Fair Trade Commission, all required antitrust clearances have now been obtained.
Mobileye also announced that Intel and Mobileye have agreed that the tender offer will expire at 5:00 p.m., New York City time, on August 7, 2017, unless the tender offer is extended or earlier terminated, in either case pursuant to the terms of the Purchase Agreement. The tender offer was previously scheduled to expire at 5:00 p.m., New York City time, on August 11, 2017. Mobileye shareholders are urged to tender their shares into the tender offer prior to its expiration. Mobileye shareholders who have already tendered and not withdrawn their ordinary shares of Mobileye do not have to re-tender their shares or take any other action as a result of the revision of the expiration date of the tender offer.
Completion of the tender offer remains subject to additional conditions described in the tender offer statement on Schedule TO filed by Cyclops with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (the “SEC”) on April 5, 2017 (as amended and supplemented, the “Schedule TO”), including that at least 67 percent of Mobileye’s outstanding shares be validly tendered and not withdrawn prior to the expiration of the tender offer (including any extensions). Intel further announced that if all of the conditions to the tender offer are satisfied and the offer expires as now scheduled on August 7, 2017, then Intel anticipates that the closing of the tender offer will occur on August 8, 2017.

Survey Highlights SRW Deployment Challenges and Need for Greater Education in Emerging IoT Applications
In a recent B2B technology survey of 455 U.S.-based companies in nine vertical markets, ABI Research finds that almost 70% of respondents currently have Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, or other short-range wireless (SRW) communications technologies in operation, with the remainder set to deploy in the next 12 months. But there is still a need for SRW education and awareness that extends beyond smartphones and tablets into emerging IoT applications, such as asset tracking and sensor monitoring.
“The consistent ranking of smartphones and tablets as the most innovative technologies might suggest limited knowledge of Wi-Fi and Bluetooth technologies beyond the consumer electronics space. There is a need for greater education on how SRW solutions can be used in more advanced and valuable ways, such as asset tracking, indoor location, and wireless sensor networking, all the while aligning with the existing infrastructure,” says Andrew Zignani, Senior Analyst at ABI Research.
The survey demonstrates a growing shift toward connecting manufacturing equipment/devices and/or systems to the IS/IT network for remote monitoring using SRW solutions, with 85% currently deploying Wi-Fi and 75% deploying Bluetooth. While less than one third of companies surveyed deploy 802.15.4 solutions, more than 44% plan to deploy the technology in the future. This is despite equipment misplacements being a key burden in healthcare environments.
Respondents cite the main SRW technology adoption barrier for healthcare, manufacturing, and retail environments to be aligning the technologies with the existing framework. Asset tracking and indoor location vendors are beginning to note this friction and trying to make it easier for infrastructure teams to buy into the idea by leveraging existing Bluetooth or Wi-Fi infrastructure, enabling much simpler deployment and reducing the burden on already constrained IT resources.

VisionHack – First International Hackathon on Computer Vision for Unmanned Vehicles
From September 11th-13th in Moscow, NUST MISIS and Cognitive Technologies will hold the first university hackathon on artificial intelligence and computer vision with an available prize fund of more than $30,000. Teams from MIT (USA), the University of Cambridge (Great Britain), ASU (USA), the University of Science and Technology Beijing (P.R. China), UPC (Spain), and leading Russian universities have already announced their plans to participate in the hackathon.
NUST MISIS, one of Russia’s leading technological universities, and Cognitive Technologies, a company which develops artificial intelligence systems for unmanned vehicles, will jointly organize VisionHack 2017.
According to Alevtina Chernikova, Rector of NUST MISIS: “It is not a coincidence that Russia and NUST MISIS have become a venue for holding such high-level events-Russia has one of the world`s best schools for the development of artificial intelligence. Today, our domestic developments in the field of computer vision are highly rated by leading international experts, and the NUST MISIS team for several years in a row has reached the final of the ACM/ICPC international programming championship.”
A hackathon (an international forum of IT developers) like this, dedicated to computer vision technologies and unmanned vehicles, is the first of its kind in the entire world. More than 30 teams from world leading universities such as MIT (USA), the University of Cambridge (Great Britain), ASU (USA), Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (P.R. China), University Paris-Saclay (France), the University of Science and Technology Beijing (P.R. China), and UPC (Spain) have announced their participation in the hackathon. The total number of hackathon participants is about 150 people, and the prize fund exceeds $30,000, which is a record for such an event.
Computer vision in application of practical tasks for the driving of unmanned vehicles, which is currently one of the most relevant and popular directions of artificial intelligence, has become the competition’s main theme. The participants’ aim will be to create their own intellectual subsystem for driver assistance and ADAS (advanced driver assistance system) capable of automatically detecting various events on the road (small circumstances, which sometimes seriously affect traffic safety) such as: a car stopped in the middle of the street with its hazard lights on; a dog or small child about to cross the street; the sun shining on a turn and blinding a driver, etc.
Participants will be given a large array of data – several hundred 10-second videos, which will show different road situations and problems.
“Participants will have to solve real and significant practical issues of computer vision for unmanned vehicles. We hope that the intelligent subsystems developed by participants will be included in the ADAS product lines, and will be able to significantly improve road safety, as well as to provide drivers with the necessary level of comfort. We are sure that the hackathon winners will be able to increase their value as specialist-professionals of the highest class, for whom doors to the world’s leading AI development companies are open,” said Olga Uskova, president of the Cognitive Technologies group.
The winner of the hackathon will be the team which provides the most accurate and comprehensive solution to the set of proposed road situations. Additionally, the organizers will prepare secondary prizes for qualitative decisions on specific developments.
VisionHack will be held in 2 rounds: the preliminary selection stage, from July 13th to 31st, where participants will be asked to solve test tasks. The best teams will be invited to participate in the on-site competition. Both individuals and teams (3-5 people) can register. The panel of judges will include world-famous specialists in the field of IT and artificial intelligence, business representatives, venture funds, and development institutions.
The event will be held at the NUST MISIS Commune House, an architectural monument designed in the constructivism era.
An extensive educational program and meetings with prominent representatives of the IT field (especially in the field of unmanned vehicles) will be organized for the hackathon. Top managers of famous Russian and international companies will act as mentors and lecturers at the event.
The top managers of large Russian enterprises such as Alfa Group, Severstal, VEB, Rosatom, Gazprombank, and representatives of the Russian Government will be invited to the event as honorary guests.
