Veritas Study: Organizations Worldwide Mistakenly Believe They Are GDPR Compliant

A study from Veritas Technologies, a leader in multi-cloud data management, has found that organizations across the globe mistakenly believe they are in compliance with the upcoming General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

According to findings from The Veritas 2017 GDPR Report, almost one-third (31 percent) of respondents said that their enterprise already conforms to the legislation’s key requirements. However, when those same respondents were asked about specific GDPR provisions, most provided answers that show they are unlikely to be in compliance. In fact, upon closer inspection, only two percent actually appear to be in compliance, revealing a distinct misunderstanding over regulation readiness.

The findings from the report show that almost half (48 percent) of organizations who stated they are compliant do not have full visibility over personal data loss incidents. Moreover, 61 percent of the same group admitted that it is difficult for their organization to identify and report a personal data breach within 72 hours of awareness – a mandatory GDPR requirement where there is a risk to data subjects. Any organization that is unable to report the loss or theft of personal data – such as medical records, email addresses and passwords – to the supervisory body within this timeframe is breaking with this key requirement.

The findings in this report suggest that organizations that think they are already compliant with the GDPR should revisit their compliance strategies. Failure to meet GDPR requirements could attract a fine of up to four percent of global annual turnover or €20 million, whichever is greater.

The former employee threat

Restricting former employee access to corporate data and deleting their systems credentials helps to stem malicious activity and ensure that financial loss and reputational damage are avoided. Yet, a staggering 50 percent of so-called compliant organizations said that former employees are still able to access internal data. These findings highlight that even the most confident organizations struggle to control former employee access and are potentially susceptible to attacks.

Challenges exercising “the right to be forgotten”

Under the GDPR, EU residents will have the right to request the removal of their personal data from an organization’s databases. However, Veritas’ research shows many organizations that stated they already are in compliance will not be able to search, find and erase personal data if the “right to be forgotten” principle is exercised.

Of the organizations that believe they are GDPR-ready, one-fifth (18 percent) admitted that personal data cannot be purged or modified. A further 13 percent conceded that they do not have the capability to search and analyze personal data to uncover explicit and implicit references to an individual. They are also unable to accurately visualize where their data is stored, because their data sources and repositories are not clearly defined.

These shortcomings would render a company non-compliant under the GDPR. Organizations must ensure that personal data is only used for the reasons it was collected and is deleted when it’s no longer needed.

Demystifying GDPR responsibility

Veritas’ research also found that there is a common misunderstanding among organizations regarding the responsibility of data held in cloud environments. Almost half (49 percent) of the companies that believe they comply with the GDPR consider it the sole responsibility of the cloud service provider (CSP) to ensure data compliance in the cloud. In fact, the responsibility lies with the data controller (the organization) to ensure that the data processor (the CSP) provides sufficient GDPR guarantees. This perceived false sense of protection could lead to serious  repercussions once the GDPR is enacted.

“The GDPR dictates that multi-national corporations take data management seriously. However, the latest findings show confusion over what’s needed to comply with the regulation’s mandatory provisions. With the implementation date looming ever closer, these misconceptions need to be eradicated fast,” said Mike Palmer, executive vice president and chief product officer, Veritas.

“With regulations like the GDPR you have to understand what data you have in your organization. But you must also know how to take action on it and how to classify it so that policy can be applied accordingly. These are the fundamentals of compliance and the findings today should be used to educate businesses about the mistaken beliefs that could put an organization out of business.”

The GDPR is intended to harmonize data privacy and protection mandates across European Union (EU) member states. It requires organizations to implement the appropriate protection measures and processes to effectively govern personal data. The GDPR will take effect on May 25, 2018 and will apply to any organization – inside or outside the EU – that offers goods or services to EU residents, or monitors their behavior. Click here to view the infographic for ‘The Veritas 2017 GDPR Report’.

In addition to this research, Veritas will announce today, Veritas Data Insight 6.0Veritas Enterprise Vault 12.2 and the Integrated Classification Engine, a new technology that delivers powerful intelligence into data risks on-premises and in the cloud. The classification engine provides broad visibility into personal data and helps companies meet compliance regulations, like GDPR. The Integrated Classification Engine is available now in Veritas Data Insight 6.0, and will be available with Veritas Enterprise Vault 12.2 in August. Future integrations are planned across the Veritas data protection, storage and governance portfolio. Click here to view the press release.

Worldwide Video Conferencing Market: Rising Trend of Business Operations at Multiple Locations Catalyzes Growth, Says TMR

Cisco Systems Inc. that leads the global video conferencing market has been instrumental in the development and promotion of video conferencing technology, says a new report by Transparency Market Research. The company offers a spectrum of newer video conferencing products that integrate voice, video, data, and software apps. These offerings have enhanced its brand image across the world.

Besides innovation, strategic acquisitions is the focus of the company to expand its outreach. For example, Cisco Systems Inc. acquired Acano Ltd. in a bid to expand dynamically in the video conferencing market.

Some other prominent companies in the global video conferencing market are Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd., West Unified Communications Services, ZTE Corporation, Polycom Inc., Vidyo Inc., Adobe Systems Incorporated, Microsoft Corporation, Arkadin International SAS, Logitech International S.A., Orange Business Services, and JOYCE CR, S.R.O.

As per a report by Transparency Market Research, the global video conferencing market is expected to be worth US$8,958.7 mn by 2025, expanding at a CAGR of 8.3% during the forecast period between 2017 and 2025.

North America Market to Continue Displaying Strong Growth in Future

Amongst deployment type segments, on-premise dominates the video conferencing market in terms of revenue. However, cloud-based video conferencing is anticipated to surpass on-premise segment in terms of growth rate over the forecast period.

North America held supremacy in terms of revenue in the video conferencing market in 2016. The widespread popularity of telepresence and high adoption of managed video conferencing solutions are the key factors for the dominance of the region. The region is expected to display a significant growth rate over the forecast period.

Real-time Communication among Distantly Located Teams Fuels Growth

The foremost factor driving the global video conferencing market is the increasing trend of virtual meetings with rising globalization across industries. Video conferencing allows real-time communication over long distances that benefits in the form of enhanced productivity and faster decision making. Additionally, it saves travel expenses and addresses customer queries.

In the corporate sector, video conferencing is a major communication tool used by enterprises for enhanced collaboration. It is because it allows two-way audio and video communication at minimal cost, especially in present times when organizations are focused on curtailing costs related to their means of communication. This has extended widespread opportunities for the video conferencing market.

Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) are also increasingly adopting video conferencing solutions for communication with clients at distant locations. SMEs generally rely on managed video conferencing solutions for which only peripherals such as cameras, speakers, and microphones are need to be provided by subscriber of the service. Video conferencing infrastructure including multipoint control units (MCUs), video conferencing systems, and other advanced applications and features are provided and managed by the video conferencing service provider.

The increasing trend of mobile workforce and Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) has positively impacted cloud-based video conferencing services.

On the flip side, high initial investments and high installation costs are acting as major challenges to the growth of video conferencing market. Video conferencing systems that are designed to provide a close-to-real experience of a person present in another location require high-quality video devices. These systems also need to be protected with firewalls and security software for secure data transmission that add to the cost of the system.

BRC Publish Revised BRC Global Standard for Agents and Brokers

BRC Global Standards is pleased to announce that the new version of the BRC Global Standard for Agents and Brokers Issue 2 will be published on 1 August 2017.

Originally, developed and published in 2014, the BRC Global Standard has been updated to reflect the current thinking in product safety, to expand the scope to incorporate consumer products and to encourage adoption of the BRC Global Standard worldwide. The BRC Global Standard provides a framework to manage product safety, quality and legality for businesses in the food, packaging and consumer products industries which buy, sell or facilitate the trade of products, but who do not manufacture, process or store products in their own facilities or on their own site.

Certification against the BRC Global Standard is recognised by many retailers, food service companies and manufacturers around the world when assessing the capabilities of their suppliers. Th Global Standard for Agents and Brokers has been developed to specify the safety, quality and operational criteria required to fulfil obligations with regard to legal compliance and protection of the consumer or end user of the product. The format and content of the BRC Global Standard is designed to allow an assessment of a company’s product safety management systems and procedures by a competent third party – the certification body – against the requirements of the BRC Global Standard.

The BRC Global Standard may be used by companies operating the following services:

  • Brokers – companies that purchase or ‘take title to’ products for resale to manufacturers, other brokers, retailers or food service companies but do not directly sell to the consumer.
  • Agents or non-manufacturing service providers – companies that trade between a manufacturer or broker and their customer but do not at any point own or take title to the goods. Such companies provide a range of services to facilitate the safe and legal trade of products.

The BRC Global Standard for Agents and Brokers Issue 2 will be available on BRC Participate, along with the Interpretation Guideline and additional supporting publications. BRC Participate offers immediate access to all documents relevant to a particular BRC Global Standard, linking them clause by clause. Printed copies and PDF downloads are also available for purchase from the BRC Bookshop.

Survey Highlights SRW Deployment Challenges and Need for Greater Education in Emerging IoT Applications

In a recent B2B technology survey of 455 U.S.-based companies in nine vertical markets, ABI Research finds that almost 70% of respondents currently have Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, or other short-range wireless (SRW) communications technologies in operation, with the remainder set to deploy in the next 12 months. But there is still a need for SRW education and awareness that extends beyond smartphones and tablets into emerging IoT applications, such as asset tracking and sensor monitoring.

Logo –

“The consistent ranking of smartphones and tablets as the most innovative technologies might suggest limited knowledge of Wi-Fi and Bluetooth technologies beyond the consumer electronics space. There is a need for greater education on how SRW solutions can be used in more advanced and valuable ways, such as asset tracking, indoor location, and wireless sensor networking, all the while aligning with the existing infrastructure,” says Andrew Zignani, Senior Analyst at ABI Research.

The survey demonstrates a growing shift toward connecting manufacturing equipment/devices and/or systems to the IS/IT network for remote monitoring using SRW solutions, with 85% currently deploying Wi-Fi and 75% deploying Bluetooth. While less than one third of companies surveyed deploy 802.15.4 solutions, more than 44% plan to deploy the technology in the future. This signifies potential growth for ZigBee, WirelessHART, and other mesh solutions in this space.

Organizations can leverage smartphones, tablets, and smart glasses as human-machine-interfaces to monitor and configure machines wirelessly. Alternatively, a more elaborate mesh network can transmit data to a central gateway and control system. Wireless devices save time by reducing the need for manual measurements. They also eliminate expensive human-machine interface (HMI) equipment, give workers greater flexibility, increase safety, and are ideal for hard-to-reach installations and hazardous environments.

In healthcare environments, survey respondents see mobile devices and consumer wearables as the main transformative technologies over the next five years. In contrast, respondents consider clinical-grade wearables, remote monitoring, home health monitoring, and asset tracking to be lower priority innovations, with only 2% seeing asset and resource tracking as the most important technology transformation. This is despite equipment misplacements being a key burden in healthcare environments.

Respondents cite the main SRW technology adoption barrier for healthcare, manufacturing, and retail environments to be aligning the technologies with the existing framework. Asset tracking and indoor location vendors are beginning to note this friction and trying to make it easier for infrastructure teams to buy into the idea by leveraging existing Bluetooth or Wi-Fi infrastructure, enabling much simpler deployment and reducing the burden on already constrained IT resources.

These findings are from ABI Research’s Industry Survey: Transformative Technology Adoption and Attitudes – Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Short-Range Wireless report. This report is part of the company’s Wi-Fi, Bluetooth & Wireless Connectivity service, which includes research, data, and analyst insights.

VisionHack – First International Hackathon on Computer Vision for Unmanned Vehicles

From September 11th-13th in Moscow, NUST MISIS and Cognitive Technologies will hold the first university hackathon on artificial intelligence and computer vision with an available prize fund of more than $30,000. Teams from MIT (USA), the University of Cambridge (Great Britain), ASU (USA), the University of Science and Technology Beijing (P.R. China), UPC (Spain), and leading Russian universities have already announced their plans to participate in the hackathon.

NUST MISIS, one of Russia’s leading technological universities, and Cognitive Technologies, a company which develops artificial intelligence systems for unmanned vehicles, will jointly organize VisionHack 2017.

According to Alevtina Chernikova, Rector of NUST MISIS: “It is not a coincidence that Russia and NUST MISIS have become a venue for holding such high-level events-Russia has one of the world`s best schools for the development of artificial intelligence. Today, our domestic developments in the field of computer vision are highly rated by leading international experts, and the NUST MISIS team for several years in a row has reached the final of the ACM/ICPC international programming championship.”

A hackathon (an international forum of IT developers) like this, dedicated to computer vision technologies and unmanned vehicles, is the first of its kind in the entire world. More than 30 teams from world leading universities such as MIT (USA), the University of Cambridge (Great Britain), ASU (USA), Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (P.R. China), University Paris-Saclay (France), the University of Science and Technology Beijing (P.R. China), and UPC (Spain) have announced their participation in the hackathon. The total number of hackathon participants is about 150 people, and the prize fund exceeds $30,000, which is a record for such an event.

Computer vision in application of practical tasks for the driving of unmanned vehicles, which is currently one of the most relevant and popular directions of artificial intelligence, has become the competition’s main theme. The participants’ aim will be to create their own intellectual subsystem for driver assistance and ADAS (advanced driver assistance system) capable of automatically detecting various events on the road (small circumstances, which sometimes seriously affect traffic safety) such as: a car stopped in the middle of the street with its hazard lights on; a dog or small child about to cross the street; the sun shining on a turn and blinding a driver, etc.

Participants will be given a large array of data – several hundred 10-second videos, which will show different road situations and problems.

“Participants will have to solve real and significant practical issues of computer vision for unmanned vehicles. We hope that the intelligent subsystems developed by participants will be included in the ADAS product lines, and will be able to significantly improve road safety, as well as to provide drivers with the necessary level of comfort. We are sure that the hackathon winners will be able to increase their value as specialist-professionals of the highest class, for whom doors to the world’s leading AI development companies are open,” said Olga Uskova, president of the Cognitive Technologies group.

The winner of the hackathon will be the team which provides the most accurate and comprehensive solution to the set of proposed road situations. Additionally, the organizers will prepare secondary prizes for qualitative decisions on specific developments.

VisionHack will be held in 2 rounds: the preliminary selection stage, from July 13th to 31st, where participants will be asked to solve test tasks. The best teams will be invited to participate in the on-site competition. Both individuals and teams (3-5 people) can register. The panel of judges will include world-famous specialists in the field of IT and artificial intelligence, business representatives, venture funds, and development institutions.

The event will be held at the NUST MISIS Commune House, an architectural monument designed in the constructivism era.

An extensive educational program and meetings with prominent representatives of the IT field (especially in the field of unmanned vehicles) will be organized for the hackathon. Top managers of famous Russian and international companies will act as mentors and lecturers at the event.

The top managers of large Russian enterprises such as Alfa Group, Severstal, VEB, Rosatom, Gazprombank, and representatives of the Russian Government will be invited to the event as honorary guests.

World-renowned companies and developers of artificial intelligence, unmanned technologies, and hardware are among the event`s business partners.

Gas Generator Market to Grow 8.01% CAGR to 2021 Says a New Research Report at ReportsnReports

Gas generator market analyst says the latest trend gaining momentum in the market is emerging alternative backup power equipment. Generators have been in use as auxiliary power equipment for a long time in residential households. However, the emergence and growing popularity of alternative backup power equipment will have a negative impact on the global gas generator market, especially the portable gas generator segment.

Complete report on Gas Generator market spread across 76 pages, analyzing 33 major companies with table of content now available at .

According to the gas generator market report, one of the major drivers for this market is Growing popularity of gas generators. Diesel generators are noisier than gas generators and are not used in commercial and residential applications. Thus, many large end-users have started using gas generators, which has led to an increased manufacturing of gas-powered generators. End-users are opting for gas generators as, unlike a diesel generator, the work of filling a generator with gas during a power outage is eliminated.

The analysts forecast global gas generator market to grow at a CAGR of 8.01% during the period 2017-2021. The study was conducted using an objective combination of primary and secondary information including inputs from key participants in the industry. The report contains a comprehensive market and vendor landscape in addition to a SWOT analysis of the key vendors.

The following companies as the key players in the global gas generator market: Caterpillar, Cummins, Generac Power Systems, and Kohler. Further, the report states that one of the major factors hindering the growth of this market is Technological advances in diesel generators impact the adoption of gas generators. In diesel engine technology, improved fuel economy continues to be the most significant development. Diesel generators are used significantly in the industrial sector, although currently, a majority of the end-users, in general, prefer gas generators. The industrial sector considers fuel economy as an important parameter while buying equipment for power backup.

Another related report is Global Diesel Generator Market for Industrial Applications 2017-2021, the analysts forecast global diesel generator market for industrial applications to grow at a CAGR of 4.65% during the period 2017-2021. The following companies as the key players in the global diesel generator market for industrial applications: Caterpillar, Cummins, Generac, and Kohler. Other Prominent Vendors in the market are: APR Energy, Atlas Copco, JCB Broadcrown, Dresser-Rand, FG Wilson, General Electric, GUANGDONG WESTINPOWER, HIMOINSA, Kirloskar Oil Engines, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, MQ Power, MTU Onsite Energy, Perkins, Wacker Neuson, Wärtsilä, and Yanmar.

One trend in the market is generator rental services. When it comes to large diesel generators, industrial end-users are often opting for rental services instead of buying them. This trend is more evident in developing nations where the total cost of ownership is an important aspect of the total revenue earned. Revenue earned is generally evaluated in terms of revenue earned either by renting power backup equipment or from a temporary power plant. Browse complete report at .

RCI Expands Offerings for Global Travelers with the Acquisition of Love Home Swap

RCI, part of the Wyndham Worldwide family of brands (NYSE: WYN), has acquired London-based Love Home Swap, one of the world’s largest home exchange programs. Through the acquisition, RCI adds a company that complements its existing business, broadens its appeal to a new base of holidaymakers and strengthens its position as a leader within the global alternative holiday accommodation sector.

“Since first pioneering the vacation exchange concept more than 40 years ago, RCI has continually found new ways to evolve and grow its own business while also propelling the exchange industry further,” said Gordon Gurnik, president of RCI. “Through this acquisition we expand the exchange options we offer travelers and strengthen our footprint in key growth markets across the globe.”

As part of the RCI family of brands, Love Home Swap will benefit from the core competencies RCI has developed over the past four decades as the leader in vacation exchange, including inventory management, member marketing and analytics. The company will also enjoy the added resources that come with being part of a global hospitality leader like Wyndham Worldwide, along with potential access to its portfolio of accommodation options around the world.

Love Home Swap, which has established a strong, loyal consumer base, will continue to run as an independent brand and be marketed separately from RCI. However, the similarities among these exchange-oriented businesses will allow for greater collaboration between the companies to foster growth and provide future travel benefits to their respective members.

RCI’s acquisition of Love Home Swap builds upon a previous investment in the company in 2015. Love Home Swap Founder, Debbie Wosskow, will remain on as an advisor to ensure a smooth transition into the RCI family. Ben Wosskow, formerly chief commercial officer, has been appointed to managing director and will oversee the daily operations of the business.

“I’d like to thank the team and everyone involved in driving Love Home Swap forward,” said Debbie Wosskow. “Dedication and hard work has yielded fantastic results in a short space of time and this is a real global success story for the UK sharing economy. We’re delighted to join the RCI family and are excited to work closely with them to help shape the future of the travel industry together.”
